There’s Beauty In Simplicity

A stool is the simplest kind of furniture in existence. So simple in fact that in its most basic form, it’s nothing but a square block of wood. Sometimes, if we’re being fancy, with a hole in it for tucking in your legs. In its most elegant form, though, it’s the M Stool.

Jørgen Møller, the man behind what is maybe our most iconic piece, is an icon in and of himself. Having drawn and sculpted many beautiful furniture silhouettes through his time, his most quintessentially Scandinavian design has to be the M Stool. It’s defined by its simplicity. By it being nothing but a strikingly stable and comfortable seat that vaguely resembles that of an M.

It’s those characteristics – and the courage to be nothing but them – that makes this such a defining piece of furniture in Danish design history and a cherished classic in our collection.

Jørgen Møller

Jørgen Møller (Denmark, 1930-2011) Architect and Industrial Designer He concluded his apprenticeship as builder with silver medal in 1953 and began his career as a designer in 1961 at Arne Jacobsen’s studio where he stayed until 1969, after that he worked on his own and collaborated with Professor Erik Herløw, a pioneer of Danish design and founder or the design faculty at Charlottenborg School of Architecture. At the same time he began his long and prolific partnership with Georg Jensen Silversmith, while also working on catalogues for many other companies. He has designed many everyday objects, all based on the idea that everything that we use has to have not only a functional shape, but also to be able to communicate beauty.

M stool

What is a stool, really? You have to think Jørgen Møller, the man behind the M Stool, asked himself that before he sat pen to paper and began drawing. Consequently, you have to imagine he was quite chuffed 4 seconds later, when he put pen off paper and gazed upon the answer he gave himself; when he gazed upon the simple lines that now make up a worldwide icon of Scandinavian design.

Because the M Stool is just that. Uncompromisingly Scandinavian. The entire silhouette is nothing but a slightly tilted M-shape made in astoundingly solid materials utilizing the best possible production methods to create an equally beautiful and comfortable (yes, comfortable) design.

High praise for a stool, we know. But the M Stool deserves any and all praise it can get. The simple design has proved its worth in both simple and decadent surroundings around the world for a reason. The M stool can be stacked in numbers, and comes in many different materials.
